Nira is a research tool for Indian GST and indirect-tax case law. Connected to Claude or ChatGPT, it lets your assistant search judgments and rulings, read the court's own paragraphs, read a section as it stood on a date, check whether a decision still stands, and check a draft's citations. It is free in Claude and ChatGPT, and no credit card is needed.

What the connector does
Your assistant calls Nira's tools when a question needs authority. Each result carries its court, date, document id and paragraph numbers. Nira holds Supreme Court, High Court, CESTAT and GSTAT decisions, advance rulings, Acts and rules, and CBIC notifications, circulars and orders. Coverage is uneven by court and year; the coverage page says where. A decision Nira does not hold is reported as not found.
Connect in Claude (claude.ai and the desktop app)
Custom connectors work on every Claude plan; the Free plan allows one.
- Open Customize > Connectors. (Older versions call this Settings > Connectors.)
- Choose Add custom connector, name it Nira, enter the URL above, and continue to Add.
- Claude takes you to Nira to sign in; if not, click Connect beside Nira. Approve access, then sign in with email or Google.
- In a chat, use the + button, then Connectors, and switch Nira on.
On Team and Enterprise plans an Owner adds it first, under Organization settings > Connectors (Add, Custom, Web); each member then clicks Connect on it under Customize > Connectors. If Nira is listed in Anthropic's connectors directory, you can connect from there instead.
Connect in Claude Code
- In your terminal, run
claude mcp add --transport http nira https://mcp.praxeumai.com/mcp - Start Claude Code, type
/mcp, choose Nira and follow the steps in your browser to sign in. - Run
claude mcp list; Nira shows as Connected.
Connect in ChatGPT
Use ChatGPT on the web. Whether you can add a custom connector depends on your plan and, in a workspace, on your admin's settings.
- Open Plugins, select the plus button, then Add custom MCP server.
- Name it Nira. Under Connection, enter the server URL above.
- Set authentication to OAuth.
- Read the risk warning, select I understand and want to continue, then Create as a plugin.
- Sign in to Nira when asked, install the plugin, start a new conversation, type
@and choose Nira.
If your ChatGPT shows Apps instead of Plugins, look there for the same option. Menu names change; each assistant's help pages have the current steps.
The seven tools
| Tool | What it does | Reads or writes |
|---|---|---|
search_precedents | Finds judgments, tribunal orders and advance rulings by question, citation, case number or party. Give your High Court and binding decisions rank first. | Reads |
search_law | Finds Acts, rules, notifications, circulars and CBIC orders. | Reads |
get_provision | Gives one named provision or notification as it stood on a date, with omissions noted. | Reads |
get_case | Opens a decision and reads its paragraphs in order. | Reads |
check_status | Shows dated flags: appealed, stayed, overruled, legislatively overridden. A decision with no flag has no recorded later history, which is not confirmation that it is good law. | Reads |
check_citations | Checks a pasted draft: is each citation held, is each quotation in the judgment word for word, does the authority still stand. | Reads |
record_verification | Adds a short note that you checked a fact on a result. | Writes one note |
Only record_verification writes. Your assistant may ask your permission before it uses it.
Three prompts to try
- "I practise in Tamil Nadu. Find High Court decisions on denying input tax credit under section 16(2)(c) to a buyer because the supplier did not pay the tax, and quote the one that binds me."
- "What does section 16(4) of the CGST Act say today, and which words were omitted from it and when?" Our section 16(4) guide covers the time limit.
- "Here is my draft reply to a show cause notice. Check every citation and every quotation in it against the judgments. [paste the draft]"
Limits and fair use
Each account has a fair-use allowance of 100 searches a day. search_precedents, search_law and check_citations each count as one; opening a case, reading a provision, checking a status and recording a note do not. It resets at midnight UTC, which is 5:30 am in India. At the limit the tool tells your assistant when to try again. Nira's website plans are on the pricing page; your Claude or ChatGPT plan is separate.
Privacy and your data
- Received: the tool request your assistant sends (a search question, a document id, or a draft you ask it to check) and your sign-in identity. Not your conversation.
- Kept: logs link a request to your account only through a one-way code and are kept for up to 90 days. They keep the text of your searches and the documents returned and opened, to improve results and build new features. From a draft you ask Nira to check, only the citations and quotations are kept, never the rest of the draft. Sign-in tokens are stored encrypted until they expire or you disconnect. A note you record is kept.
- Your assistant has its own privacy policy for your conversation. Leave out client names if your engagement terms require it.
The privacy policy has the full terms.
Disconnect
In Claude, open Customize > Connectors and choose Remove (or the three-dot menu). In Claude Code, run claude mcp remove nira. In ChatGPT, remove the plugin in your plugin settings. Your assistant can then no longer call Nira, and the sign-in tokens held for it expire.
